Max Thommes - DasRADIAL

Actor and musician Max Thommes explains his multidisciplinary artistic project, where electronic music, digital media, and performing arts merge seamlessly.

The Project


In this project, I perform as my alter ego DasRADIAL, exploring transcultural paths between music, film, dance, and live performances. The project involves the production, marketing, live show, and tour of the RADIKAL_VIRAL EP, as well as the revival of the dance performance IM_SCHATTEN.

DasRADIAL has existed since 2015 as an idea and feeling. Over the years, the desire to undertake larger projects in this context has grown. I wanted to finalize the EP in the studio and revive IM_SCHATTEN. After discussions with other artists, I felt it was the right time to apply for the stART-up fund.

Through my work, I aim to question global events, the digital evolution of our era, and the absurdities of daily life. I want to make the audience think – all while dancing.

The Execution


Over the past year, the EP evolved into an album that I am still working on. The recording of RADIKAL_VIRAL is currently in its final stage. Thanks to the support of the fund, I had the time and resources to focus on it and set new goals.

The revival of IM_SCHATTEN in June 2022 in Esch-sur-Sûre was a great success for both the team and the audience, despite logistical challenges. Touring the performance proved complex due to the intricate technical requirements, especially for outdoor productions. Unpredictable factors like weather and venues posed challenges, but with flexibility and spontaneous adjustments, we modified rehearsal schedules and stage setups to minimize risks. Ultimately, the weather cooperated, and we successfully presented the performance.

I am thrilled with what we achieved as the IM_SCHATTEN collective. The revival allowed us to address the technical and aesthetic issues from the previous year and elevate the performance.

So far, both projects have received very positive feedback. The most exciting aspect of artistic work is that audience opinions and tastes can differ. My art doesn't have to please everyone; I trust the audience to embrace something unknown and surprising.

Objective


For artists, it's important to have an outlet to release accumulated impressions. My creative drive encourages me to make mistakes, gain experiences, and bring new ideas to life. DasRADIAL helps me channel these inspirations.

The main goal of this initiative is to further professionalize DasRADIAL and cover the production costs of future projects. Therefore, I aim to develop the RADIKAL_VIRAL album as precisely as possible before presenting it to a broader audience. After creating the live show with another musician, several concerts are planned at festivals (e.g., Usina Festival).

Through these projects, I have learned a great deal about myself and my artistic process. They have advanced me both personally and artistically. Additionally, I have built a stable foundation that will help me continue to professionalize DasRADIAL.
