The project "Karibuni – hang on!" is an initiative aimed at supporting the school and social integration of young refugees in Luxembourg. It provides personalized assistance to help them integrate into the education system, prepares professional opportunities through internships and apprenticeships, and encourages their self-determination and active participation in society. In 2023, he served 83 young people, providing them with tools for education, vocational training, and the social skills necessary for success.
The idea for this project was born out of the awareness of the unique challenges faced by young refugees, particularly linguistic and cultural barriers. This observation was reinforced by the lack of programs tailored to their specific needs in the context of formal education and professional integration in Luxembourg. After in-depth discussions with educators and integration specialists, the idea took shape and materialized into this inspiring project.
So far, the project has successfully integrated various young people into education and training programs, with the constant support of local partners and the active participation of beneficiaries. In 2023, the project achieved significant milestones: 83 young people were actively supported, including 24 who participated in literacy courses, 24 in the summer academy, and 12 in specialized training in peer mediation.
The main difficulties encountered include the fluctuation of participants' engagement, largely due to the instability of their personal and legal situation. In addition, effectively coordinating with various partners and raising awareness among local employers about the needs of refugees presents ongoing challenges. Finally, cultural and linguistic barriers remain significant, requiring constant efforts to overcome them and ensure successful integration.
Despite the challenges encountered, "Karibuni – hang on!" remains firmly committed to supporting and accompanying young refugees in their integration process.
Aline Nepomuceno and Elodie Besson, project managers at Jesuit Refugee Service Luxembourg, emphasize: "We must continue to work together to overcome these obstacles and offer young refugees the best chances of success in their new life in Luxembourg." This determination reflects an unwavering commitment to a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
